History

North Star Steel company was founded in October 1965 in St. Paul, Minn., and began steel-scrap-recycling operations at the St. Paul minimill in 1967. The company was acquired in February 1974. North Star's operations currently include electric-arc furnace minimills in Beaumont, Texas; St. Paul, Minn.and Wilton, Iowa. We have a steel rolling mill in Calvert City, Ky. and a grinding-ball plant in Duluth, Minn.. Also, in a joint venture with BHP Steel of Australia, North Star/BHP is operating a 1.5 million ton-per-year minimill near Delta, Ohio to produce flat-rolled steel.

Since 1974, North Star's annual steel-production capacity has risen from 300,000 tons to our current level of 3.5 million tons, and our employment has risen from 600 to over 2,500. Productivity averages less than two worker-hours per ton of steel.
